Learning to Drive and going to test in the Sandy & Biggleswade areas
Beginner learners will begin on quieter “nursery routes” to gain the foundation skills of driving, focusing on car control and observations in these areas, this is likely to be on calmer residential streets—with simple junctions and predictable traffic. These environments are perfect for building early confidence in moving off, steering, basic manoeuvres and meeting oncoming vehicles safely.

Many learners opt to take their driving test at the Bedford test centre, you either turn left out the industrial area heading towards Brickhill and Putnoe, or right at the lights taking you towards Clapham and onto the A6 towards Oakley. Typical roads that may feature are Kimbolton Road, Castle Road & Shakespeare Road, together with multi laned roundabouts and the ‘turbo’ roundabout on Union street.
Bedford tests consistently combine industrial access roads, busy A‑roads, complex roundabouts and residential streets, making smooth planning and rapid adjustment of speed and position essential throughout the drive.

Letchworth driving test center
Test routes typically begin around Jackmans Place and regularly include main roads such as Pixmore Avenue, Norton Way North and South, Baldock Road, Hitchin Street, London Road (A505), Great North Road, Works Road and Letchworth Gate. These roads expose candidates to a variety of roundabouts, traffic‑light controlled junctions, speed‑limit changes and busier town‑centre traffic, particularly around the Broadway and Baldock areas. Some routes also include faster‑flowing sections such as the Hitchin Road corridor.
Commonly used locations include Birds Hill, Glebe Road, Green Lane, Hillshott, Sollershott East, Southfields, Wilbury Road, Grange Road and the Willian village area.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many hours will I need before being ready to take the practical test?
This is a difficult question for us to answer, as all students will learn at their own pace. The national average is around 45 hours of tuition with an instructor. Although this is a statistic published by the DVSA and we have found that these figures can vary greatly from one learner to the next. Some students will learn a lot quicker, whilst others may take longer.
Do you offer any discount?
Yes, we offer block booking discounts on our regular lesson prices. If you buy a block of 10 hours you will receive a discount.
Do I need my provisional licence before I can book my first lesson?
Yes you will need to have received your provisional licence before booking your first driving lesson. If a lesson is booked in with an instructor and you do not have your licence, the lesson cannot go ahead. By law, we need to see your licence on your very first lesson.
Do I need to pass my theory before I can start my driving lessons?
No, you can start your lessons at any time, and you do not have to have passed your theory test before you start your practical lessons. We offer access to the Theory Test Pro Programme for all our learners. Many of our learners have found revising for the theory while having practical lessons actually helps them understand aspects of the theory better. We would recommend that you study your theory whilst taking your practical driving lessons.
Can I choose my driving instructor?
Yes, if you have any preference at all on who you would like to learn with, please let us know, and we will do everything we can to try and fit you into their diary as quickly as possible.
What will my first lesson consist of?
Your first lesson will be based on your current level of ability. Generally, if you have never driven before, your instructor will drive you to a suitable location to ensure your safety whilst getting used to the car. This might be in a car park or on a quiet road. You will then go through with your instructor setting the car up so that you are comfortable and in the correct position to drive, your instructor will then explain some of the basic controls of the car. We aim to get everybody driving on their first lesson, the focus being on moving off and stopping safely. Depending on the length of the lesson and your previous knowledge/experience you may start looking at gears and junctions too.
Will my lessons be at the same time every week?
This depends on your diary and the instructor’s diary, for example many of our learners who study have week 1 & week 2 timetables. This means they need a different lesson time or day each week. Our instructors will do their best to accommodate your availability each week to ensure you receive a weekly lesson.
